Adjunctive Treatment

Our dentists are committed to providing a positive dental experience for your child and, when treating, we always keep the health and psychological well-being of your child in mind. We therefore offer two important alternatives in addition to local anesthesia in the traditional dental setting.

Nitrous Oxide

Commonly known as laughing gas, nitrous oxide is an exceptionally safe “helper” for the anxious but cooperative child. Nitrous Oxide aids in relieving your child’s anxiety and can make them more comfortable in the dental environment. One of the desirable effects of nitrous oxide is that it is reversible, meaning that its effects are negated when it is time to leave. Your child will always be closely monitored throughout the procedure.

Anesthesia

We offer multiple anesthesia options depending on your child’s history and needs. The best anesthetic for your child will depend on the type of dental procedure, your child’s past experiences, your medical history and personal preferences, and your doctor’s recommendation. Dentistry performed when your child is fully asleep is only accomplished in the presence of a trained anesthesiologist.

  • For healthy children and children with medical issues and/or special needs, we provide dental care at Ann and Robert H. Lurie Children's hospital. The experienced pediatric anesthesiologists at Lurie Children’s help us to create a safe environment in which we can fulfill your child’s dental needs.
  • For a healthy child who is unable to cooperate or has complex dental work to be done, an office based anesthesia procedure in our state-of-the-art facility can be a valuable option. Dr. Michael Higgins provides the anesthesia services for our practice. He has twenty-five plus years of experience and is board certified with the National Board of Anesthesiology, along with the American Dental Board of Anesthesiology. He is also a Fellow of the National Board of Anesthesiology, and he holds the academic rank of Associate Professor in Anesthesiology with the University of Illinois. His careful care and thorough monitoring ensure that your child’s health and well-being are our number one priority.
